VP Harris hits back at critics of her laugh: ‘Don’t be confined to other people’s perception’

Vice President Kamala Harris likes to laugh and knows that people make fun of it.  

But it would appear, at least in an upcoming interview on the “Drew Barrymore Show,” that Ms. Harris does not let the negativity get to her. Ms. Harris spoke in the interview clip first reported by Mediaite about criticism that public figures often face when they slip or make a gaffe. 

Ms. Harris said that people still “have to get used to” her being the first female vice president, and then addressed the criticism of her trademark laugh.

“I mean, my staff, for example, sometimes they’ll show me little things that just amuse me,” Ms. Harris told the talk show host. “Like, apparently, some people love to talk about the way I laugh.”

The vice president explained that she grew up with women in her life who would gather around and tell stories that were filled with plenty of laughter. That experience taught her to never put down another for laughing, she said. 

“Let me tell you something,” Ms. Harris said. “I have my mother’s laugh. And I grew up around a bunch of women in particular who laugh from the belly.”

She continued, “And I think it’s really important for us to remind each other and our younger ones, don’t be confined to other people’s perception about what this looks like, and … how you should act in order to be right.”
